Lithocholic acid (LCA) is a bile acid that acts as a detergent to solubilize fats for absorption in the intestine. Mass spectrometry-based analysis of LCA is routinely performed in clinical diagnostic testing applications including neonatal testing of inborn errors of bile acid synthesis and differentiating among types of familial intrahepatic cholestasis.
